This was a long read ... over 8 hours. It is an exciting telling of the forces that pulled together during the Battle of Britain to create the famed commando unit that plagued German efforts to invade England. While England was suffering daily bombardment by the Luftwaffe a group of daring fighting men from the survivors of Calais and Dunkirk led by an American volunteer in British service, underwent rigorous training to become not only commandos, but capable parachutists who brought the war to the Germans with hit and run raids. This, despite “territorial†wars within the various branches of the military and intelligence operatives and some animosity from “old school†aristocrats. The pace of the story suffered occasionally from lapses into redundant details necessitated by what appears to be an effort for book two to be a stand alone novel. Glad I read it and there’s more to come. At the conclusion of book two, the U.S. had yet to enter the war beyond its lend lease efforts.
Interesting and suspenseful historical fiction of the founding of a British commando team before American entry into WWII. The training and tactics described accurately reflect American airborne, Ranger, and commando tactics, and I assume British tactics. Although the 5 paragraph field order has been around much longer than MAJ Randall, we can assume that he adopted it to meet his needs. The book accurately describes Ranger School/commando training that pushes the students to their limits to show them how much more they are capable of than they imagined. The books are somewhat fanciful in having a rich widow fall in love with the commando leader. The raiding forces actions are plausible, but the final lone wolf action by MAJ Randall stretches the imagination.
World war 2 has been raked over continuously, so when I bought this I had an idea that it would be going over old news. Was I wrong! It started with the destruction of Calais and the Dunkirk retreat, and ran gleefully on with the creation of the first modern special forces raiding commandos. I could not stop reading this. This pair of books are a great read and it fills the information gaps from my history class. If only school could have this set as part of required reading, I would have paid more attention. It even has Man Flemming in on planning sessions for raids!
A fun war story. The author spins a tale that includes the hardships of training and fighting a small part of WOO. Somehow, he manages to work in a bit of comedy and a bit of romance of the kind that happens in the turmoil of war.Great portraits of the men and women that show the British culture changing and yet retaining that which makes it unique, what.Great example of the Kings English in the dialogue.
Although packed with lots of action, it's unbelievable that all of those actions can take place with just one KIA and several wounded, but then it's a novel. Also, there were numerous grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors that, for me, detracted from the story. But, all things considered, I recommend its reading.
I didn't finish reading this book because it was not what I expected. I thought I was going to read an action/adventure book, but the author seemed to leave that out. He wrote a lot about preparing for action, but even that was not well written enough to hold my attention. Maybe it gets better later in the book, but there wasn't enough there to hold my attention long enough to find out.
If you know anything about the development of combined operations during WWll you will enjoy these books. There is a stretch here and omission there but all in all a pretty good account of the trial and error approach to the combined operations initiative by the English. And Major Randall is the luckiest soldier who ever lived (even in a book of fiction)!
The first third of the first book was fantastic -- five star material. As the series progressed it became more predictable and suspension of disbelief became impossible. I'll give it 3 stars because it held my attention enough to finish the series although at times I just rolled my eyes and had to power through.
