From Booklist
An improvement over sterile word books and scattered online reference works, this succinct and focused thesaurus offers 300,000 synonyms and 100,000 antonyms, with pedagogy sprinkled along the way. A readable layout blends boldface entries and italicized models among word lists and limits dingbats to arrows. The text favors a variety of users. For the beginning writer or student of composition, “Choose the Right Word†notes encourage contrast, such as sterile versus sanitary. “Word Linksâ€Â advance readers to alternate listings, for example, from reptile to herpetology. “Word Spectrum†sidebars offer a word continuum, as with the scale of terms from plain to fancy, and new “Word Toolkits,†a form of cross-referencing, connect the reader to close synonyms, such as daunting and formidable. Signed commentary under “Word Notes†offers insight into how and why connotations collect around words. Some, such as David Lehman’s analysis of foundation garments, stray from pedagogy to a cutesy irrelevance. Michael Dirda’s definition of patriotic implies that lovers of their homeland are all male. For this edition, the thematic tables of words from architecture, cooking, geography, and other areas have been collected in a “Wordfinder†section in the center of the volume along with a three-page list of archaic terms and a two-page compilation of such artsy terms as troublous and espy. Although the thesaurus does not seem to have grown, and updating appears to be minimal, this edition is easier to read. Recommended for most libraries that did not acquire the first edition as well as for libraries where the first edition is dog-eared.

I love looking through this just for fun. It is easy to find words. There are helpful hints as well so it makes it easier to remember which word is more appropriate to use. I just wish I had gotten this sooner as I am learning so many cool things and this is helping me write better!
Great, newer thesaurus for writers who need more word options than the older paperback reg Roget’s.
I received one and gave this back to him as a gift. He is in awe. Thank you for having it available!
While I don't think there is anything that makes this particular thesaurus SO much better than any other for writers, that doesn't change the fact that it is a very nice thesaurus. I've used it fairly frequently since I bought it and it hadn't failed to provide an excellent synonym yet! And not that it matters much, but it is beautifully bound and looks nice on my desk!I would definitely recommend getting this for the writers in your life, as it would make a beautiful (and useful!) gift.
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter who wants to be a writer and illustrator someday. The "Thematic Lists" in the book will be helpful in brainstorming ideas. It is simply a listing of things in a category. There are lists of Animals, Art, Clothing, Dance, Food, Games, Geography, Music, Mythology, Science, Transportation, and more. They are obviously not complete lists, but will help develop ideas. There is also a listing of "Archaic Words" which list older meanings to words that have totally different meanings today. One example I pointed out to my daughter was the word "learn", the older definition is to teach, as in "what did the teacher learn you today?" Other examples are: let=hinder, buss=a kiss, carl=man of low birth, con=study attentively or learn by heart (a piece of writing), fourscore=80, plight=solemnly pledge or promise (faith or loyalty). There is also a listing of "Literary Words" to be used in poetry or what I call flowery writing. Some examples of them are: bestrew=scatter, cockcrow=dawn, cozen=swindle crapulent relating to the drinking of alcohol, flaxen=pale yellow, gloaming=dusk, nigh-near, zephyr=a soft, gentle breeze, purl=flow with a babbling sound. There is also a language guide containing grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation, which I myself will find helpful in brushing up on their proper usage. The last feature I find helpful is the notes by the authors describing word usage, words that are confused (such as founder and flounder, or censor and censure), linked words (such as horse and equine, or tetrahedron and four), shades of meaning between opposites (such as success and failure), and other such notes. I have not had time to really explore the book yet, but it looks good so far.
A substantial tome, chock-a-block with the most advantageous adjectives and nimble nouns, a veritable writer's pantry of delicious seasonings with which to flavor one's articles, poems and short stories.Beautifully bound, an attractive book to look at, as well! I highly recommend! :)
I use this book a hundred times a day, at least. I even had my husband build a little pedestal for it, so I could have it open and at my side at all times. I've looked through a few other thesaurus' that claim to be useful to writers, but this one really is. Other than revised versions, I won't be needing another thesaurus...ever.
I am an author and The Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus was beyond my expectations. I now use it in place of my dictionary - how's that for an endorsement. I was so impressed that I bought a second copy for a friend who is also a writer; we have co-authored three novels and working on the fourth as well as creating our independent novels. When searching for a new thesaurus, the Oxford immediately caught my eye in your layout. The value was also surprising - talk about "bang for your buck!" I highly recommend "my new BFF" to your customers - even if they're not authors.
