Unfortunately, people with anxiety disorders tend to use their attributes to scare themselves. They overintellectualize, overanalyze, and use their creativity to envision the worst possible scenarios. My anxiety was a frightening experience, but at the same time it was also my protection. My constant fears and body symptoms -- feelings of bewilderment, heart palpitations, dizziness -- gave me reasons not to do the things that really scared me, like taking chances, ending unhealthy relationships, standing up for and depending upon myself. I spent many years of my life feeling different from other people. I had scary thoughts about losing control. I often worried that I would embarrass myself or the people close to me.I had always considered myself independent. Energetic as a child, creative and fun loving as a teenager, I loved to have fun and do exciting things. Yet, I remember having scary thoughts as young as seven years old. By the age of nine, I had developed an eating disorder. The sight of food made me sick. Secretly, I thought I was dying of some horrible disease. Despite a substantial weight loss, I appeared happy, but I wasn't.As time passed, the eating problems dissipated and I developed another anxiety-related problem: irritable bowel syndrome. This frustrating problem is common to many people with anxiety disorder. By fourteen, everything in my life revolved around my fear of diarrhea. I made excuses about my comings and goings. My activities were extremely limited. I couldn't enjoy my teenage years.What happened to me is what happens to so many people. One fear created another. By my sixteenth birthday, a time when I should have been focused on boys and school, I was in a constant state of worry. I remember watching the news and hearing the usual stories about someone jumping out a window or hurting someone else and I would think, "What if I did that?" Of course I didn't tell anyone about my thoughts. There might have been something wrong with me and I didn't want anyone else to think I was strange. By the time I was eighteen, I was experiencing panic attacks regularly, feeling uncomfortable in any situation where I couldn't run if need be. I began making excuses for myself. The simplest things were difficult for me.One of my most difficult challenges was being in an unhealthy relationship. I knew I should leave, but I was so insecure about being alone, I couldn't end it. It turned out that I didn't have to; he ended it. Once on my own, I moved a few times and changed jobs and, although I was full of fear, anxiety, and self-doubt, I functioned. I somehow managed to stay in my comfort zone, physically and emotionally.By my early twenties, I wondered if I was losing my mind. Insanity was my biggest fear back then. I remember driving miles out of my way to avoid passing a state Psychiatric hospital, so afraid I might end up there. The interesting thing is that most people didn't notice my strange behavior. Even those closest to me didn't know about my hidden fears. This is typical.When we are in an anxious episode, we think the whole world notices the things we do, yet very few people really do.Everyone is focused on his own life just as we are.

Probably the most empowering book I have ever read. I have suffered from Panic Disorder for almost four years, and this has affected my job, my confidence, my friendships...there basically isn't one aspect of my life that this hasn't harmed, and consequently have suffered from depression and even fear. Just before reading this book, I realized that a medication I was on was horribly screwing with my hormones, and got the implant taken out. The next tool in my recovery was getting my hand on this book. The techniques Bassett provides helped me face my fears in realistic steps and understand that I am not alone in my journey. I am not even close to being the same person I was when I picked up this book. I wouldn't trade the pain and hurt I've lived through because I know that I'm stronger for what I've gone through, but I do know that I needed direction, and I'm so blessed and grateful that I had the strength to open this book and read the first page. Please, if you're struggling in your life, give this book a chance.
i've had anxiety/panic disorder since i was 25, i'm 61 now and although i was able to function 'most' of my life, just recently, i'm having 'severe' panic attacks, the kind that come from 'seemingly' no where and they're scary so i saw the infomercial and i NEVER buy things from t.v. ads but i was desperate, this book is helping me, i've already underlined and highlighted so i can just keep going back to it, i haven't finished it yet, but i've read abut half and it describes me perfectly in parts and what i can to to help myself. i'm not into taking medication(s)....i am 'very' sensitive to all medications so i need REAL help, glad i found this book.
This is a fantastic book, I’m a 21 year old, working, college student, mom who has always struggled with anxiety to some degree but I developed horrible panic disorder after having my second child. It was to the point that it was keeping me from wanting to drive, go places, and I was having panic attacks at least once a day. I went from feeling pretty “normal†to dibillated eventually. This book was incredibly informative, which alleviated some anxiousness for me just knowing that I was not alone in what I was dealing with and that it was normal. The coping mechanisms are also amazingly helpful in retraining the brain. I don’t normally write many reviews, but this is a book I would hang on to to read again in the future as a refresh and that I would recommend (and have) to anyone dealing with any degree of stress, anxiety, etc.
My panic disorder was beyond description! This book helped me so so much after many failed attempts at self healing, medication, therapy, relaxing techniques etc .... I highly suggest this book for anyone suffering from anxiety and worse, panic attacks or agoraphobia.
i have been dealing with panic attacks and anxiety seems like forever and usually take a xanax to help me get through it. i love my xanax as it just took the edge off enough for me to deal with whatever was stressing me or making me feel panicy. but i have been going through alot of stress the last 8 months, more so than usual, and i found myself taking more and more xanax. my step uncle recommended this author and this book. it was best investment i ever made.the book was in great shape as stated by seller and was wrapped in blue tissue paper, which i felt made it more of a present, the seller wrote a personnal note thanking me for purchasing from her and the book arrived way before it was suppose to.i will be buying from this seller again.susan
This book has really been helping me. A person needs to look outside the box when reading this and really want to be helped with anxiety. Yes every story will not be like yours but its what you take out of it that matters. I was prescribed to read this book by a doctor because even medicine was not helping me. I am now slowly getting better and learning to control my thoughts and feelings with the ideas in this book.
A must read for people suffering with anxiety/ panic disorder and negative thinking. Trains you to retrain your way of thinking and turn the negative old habits of thinking into more positive thinking. Very good for helping with self esteem issues also and turning your old initial reactions into more calmer comforting realistic ones.
Very disappointing… No actual advice on true coping skills. Just a series of stories to illustrate what anxiety looks like. She emphasizes that the reader is responsible for controlling their own anxiety, which is true, but she does not provide adequate skills to do so as advertised. She also minimizes the affect of mood stabilizers and other medications that can potentially be part of the solution. Skip this one.
