I have delivered hundreds of speeches and presentations in my life. Standing before a group of people with a message from your heart and the opportunity to share something about which you are passionate is exhilarating. Preparation is what makes it comfortable.This book is a must read. I'm always striving to improve and my goal when I read a book like this is to learn something that can make me better. What I got was page after page of substantive content that both confirmed where I was on track and taught me something new. Buy this book. Do it now.
Very dissatisfied. This book is written by an author whose knowledge and recommendations about public speaking are simplistic. Quality public speaking is not magic; it takes study and practice. Sedniev wants us to believe that speaking well is like pulling rabbits out of a hat. I'm a speech communication teacher and would never give this short book to my students.
A very well organized and informative book. I teach public speaking (communications) and it's very basic, but there are a few tips in there that I hadn't thought of before that will help me this year as I approach my 17 year old curriculum with new eyes. The title alone reminds me of the quote that public speaking is an art and it can be magical if you get your skill set down in this area.
The book starts with a biography of the author as well as some sample speeches to show the expertise on the subject, however, after reading the book you will agree this author understands what makes up a good speech. The author teaches how to build the triangle of a great speech (setting, delivery & content). He goes over important things to consider; everything from where and to whom you will be speaking, to the content of your speech, to the mannerisms you have during your speech, to audience involvement and more. He goes through all the components of a speech (the speakers introduction, the opening, body and conclusion) and helps identify things that work and why. Great find.
In this book, Andrii Sedniev points out a lot on how to get an engaged audience. For someone who speaks to large audiences more often that she would like to (yes i am talking about myself), this is a must-have book. I have read countless books on public speaking but this one is different. It is highly comprehensive and fun to read. Who would have thought that little things such as being a little hungry before a speech would boost one's performance on stage? As Andrii Sedniev states "Speak just a little hungry -- you will be at the peak of your energy and you will perform your best on stage"... no wonder I am always sluggish during my speaking engagements... I have this tendency to scarf down my belly butterflies.Beginner and advanced public speakers a like, will pick up a lot of useful information inside this book. For example, I just learned that some common practices in public speaking can actually kill my speech. I would have never guessed!In summary, I am extremely happy with this book. It's a rare find! It is definitely a 5 out of 5!
Good to see a system that walks you through the steps in an easy to understand method, Magic of public speaking does just that, I liked the authors style, he seems to understand how some of us feel when speaking in public. He offers us some gems of wisdom that will certainly help in the public speaking events that we find ourselves in. Bottom Line: whether you are speaking for a large audience or just for a few people you will find this a very useful read.
I was invited to give a keynote speech for a small conference locally on small business owners.I was ashamed to admit to my friends that I still had a huge fear of public speaking. My blood runs cold and my hands shake so badly that I can't read my notes!I really appreciated this book as a resource. It gives real life examples of how to calm myself down before the speech.I was also surprised to find tip on giving an entertaining speech. In worrying about not boring the crowd, I give myself something to focus on besides my fear.This is not your run-of-the-mill "imagine everyone in their underwear" book.This is a real guide that gave great advice and left me better prepared for my task ahead.Highly recommended!
Great book! This is a good resource if you are looking to improve your public speaking skills. And the good thing about this, the author also had a fear of public speaking so it was very easy for him to explain what's going on when a person has this kind of problem or weakness. He explained everything well and gave practical tips on how to overcome fear of speaking in public. For me, he has a great writing style and I find the subject of the book very interesting so I'd highly recommend it!
