What a great disappointment. I purchased this book and the accompanying audiobook so I could enjoy another adventure with Mitch Rapp. WTH? Mitch was nothing but a tag-along character. This should have been name Azarov Adventure #1! We spent most of the book the the Russian G. Azarov from the previous novel.I did not want to follow Azarov. I wanted more Mitch. This was a fine action story but it was NOT a Mitch Rapp novel.Since Vince Flynn died and Kyle Mills has taken over the reins of the Rapp novels, they have progressively gotten further and further away from Mitch and have become just another group of action/adventure novels.I'm done following the novels written by Kyle Mills.I'm not only disappointed, I'm angry that the legacy of Vince Flynn has gotten so tarnished
First and foremost, this isn't a Mitch Rapp novel. It is a Russian bad guy novel that has Mitch Rapp as a minor character. There is none of the classic Rapp personality, no Rapp character development, almost none of the classic dialog with Irene and Mitch. One example of the Rapp persona being way off is in his conversation with his girlfriend's daughter. Mitch sees her walking home, she mentions working on a horse stall, and in Mitch's inner dialog he says "she'd been wearing him down on this horse crap since she moved in." No shot classic Rapp has that inner dialog when thinking about a child. Complete swing and miss there. The plot line seems like a pretty poor copy of Spymaster by Brad Thor. The Mills books in the Rapp series have seemed to be very uneven in an alternating pattern. I thought the first one was pretty good, the second really bad, the third installment was pretty good, and this one just totally missed the mark in my opinion.
Wow... just terrible! What happened here? This is NOT the same Mitch that we all love. He wasn't even the main character. What happened to the tough, badass Mitch Rapp? What happened to his team? Even Kennedy is portrayed differently...I'm very disappointed and have lost 5 hours of my life that I'll never get back. Mills should be ashamed for such debauchery.I've been a fan of the series since its inception but ever since Mills took over it has been on a downward spiral. He needs to go back, re-read the series and find Mitch again.
I have read every Mitch Rapp book, many several times, but Red War is the worst to date. When Kyle Mills first began writing the Rapp series a few years ago, they were terrific, and I didn't see much of a difference between Mills and Flynn--that has all changed. The last book, Enemy of the State, was definitely a step backward but thought it was just an anomaly. With each book moving further away from the basic narrative, it is truly disappointing to read. This book was void of the detail, action, and the "kick ass" Rapp we've all come to enjoy. Actually, it is hard to say this was a "Mitch Rapp book" because ultimately, he was an afterthought and played a supporting role throughout the book.
This was by far the worst book in the series. It was dull and monotonous, and Rapp was not made out to be the unbeleivable warrior he is. Part of the reason I read these books is to be wrapped up in the main characters unmatched and almost undescribable heroism. But, this time is really was not described. Boring, boring, boring. Rapp was just another character. Just a hint to the author, the main character should be the MAIN CHARACTER. Read the Dewey Andreas books by Ben Coes. Dewey is not even in the books the entire time as they are plot driven, but there is no doubt he is the main character. This Rapp book was just not like the ones before and they have been getting worse over the last few books.
First of all, this is hardly a Mitch Rapp novel. He just shows up conveniently here and there; he is by no means the main character. The plot is asinine and the action is contrived to try and fit it. There are scenes of random violence and explosions, but to no end. In other words, it simply does not make sense and the reader is forced to suspend their disbelief far too much. Hopefully this is just a glitch in the series and Mills can get back to the formula that has worked so long...
Mitch Rapp, a rough and straightforward shooter stays there. However, the storyline went too far to an extreme nationalism in both USA and Russia and jumpy. I feel that the Russia's attack on three Balkan states with NATO alliance and US's counter-attacks on the entire Russian navy fleet described as isolated events are reckless and improbable considering inherent risk of the World War Three, nuclear war.In addition, I find too many grammatical errors and wrongly footed words. It would have been better if it was read by a more excellent editor before publishing. It was a timely writing reflecting what is going on in the world and particularly in Russia and Europe but lacks sophistication. In that I miss Vince Flynn.
Unfortunately, the very worst Mitch Rapp story in the series. It was so far fetched on every front that it was unenjoyable. The medical issues were the worst - simply impossible. This is so different than any other Rapp book in that most everything in prior stories was feasible. Not here. Also, Mitch's role in this story was so minor that he was a non-issue. Id'e hope the next one gets back on track, or we lay to rest Mitch Rapp. UGHH
